THE FLOORMAP

What happens when you stand on the map?

The World of Difference, brought to life on the floor. The moment people step onto it, a conversation begins about behaviour and the differences between them.

Feel it, don’t just read about it
Take the sting out of difficult conversations
Practise a movement before you need it

The same map, but one you can stand on

The floormap is the most widely used form of the World of Difference: the map in a large format, rolled out on the floor. It works with a whole team and just as well in a one-to-one conversation. In a world of behaviour, participants take up a position. That changes the nature of the conversation, because instead of talking about a profile, people are literally standing in relation to one another.

Every step takes on meaning: moving closer, stepping back, crossing a border or briefly visiting someone else’s Area. However small, every step says something.

WHAT HAPPENS ON THE FLOORMAP

"You can almost see people being drawn into the map. Once they stand somewhere else, they even start using different words."

- Marja Talens, MapsTell Guide since 2016

WHY IT WORKS

Why the map gets a real conversation going

On the floormap, behaviour becomes visible and differences are easier to discuss. People can see where others are coming from and talk about what happens between them—without making it personal.

Behaviour visible, dynamics mapped
On paper, the difference between two profiles is abstract. On the floormap, you can see at a glance where everyone is standing and which behaviours the team shows often or hardly at all. The conversation starts immediately.
You where the other person is coming from
People may start from different Areas but often want the same thing. Someone who addresses you directly may not intend to be unkind, just as experiencing this as blunt is not wrong. On the floormap, that pattern becomes visible. That is where understanding begins.
The conversation becomes safe
It's not about the person, but about the map. You do not say that you find someone difficult; you name the behaviour you find difficult and the Area where you see it. This allows you to address what is happening without avoiding the subject.
HOW GUIDES USE IT

Four ways to use the floormap

A profile tells you where you stand. The floormap gets you moving. These four exercises are where most Guides start.

A tour of The World of Difference
Where do I go often, where do I stay away from and where would I like to go more often? Within ten minutes, a team knows more about each other than after half a day of introductions.
The team in view
Where do we stand as a group, and which behaviour are we missing? Which behaviours do we need to show more often to reach our goals and bring each other along?
Visiting someone else’s Area
Go and stand where your colleague is standing. What changes in how you look at the situation?
Where do we meet each other?
What do we agree on, who takes which step and where do we meet? Participants take that step literally on the floormap, which makes it easier to remember.
PRACTICAL

How to get a floormap

There are two ways to work with the floormap: order your own as a certified Guide, or work with a Guide who brings one to your session.

Through your Dashboard
Certified Guides can order their own floormap. They can also order PersonalMaps with MapCoins in their online dashboard.
Through a Guide
Would you like to use the floormap without becoming certified yourself? We can put you in touch with a Guide who can facilitate the session.

“The map invites action: people walk across it, look, point and laugh. They discover themselves and each other in a way a thick report could never offer.”

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the PersonalMap

Below you will find the questions we hear most often, with clear answers.

What is the MapsTell Floormap?

The World of Difference in large format, rolled out on the floor. Participants step onto it and stand where they feel at home, which makes behavioural differences literally visible and tangible.

How big is the Floormap?

About 2.5 by 3.5 metres. Allow for a room where people can also walk around it. There is a slightly smaller version available for coaching conversations.

What group sizes does MapsTell work for?

From individual coaching to large groups. The Floormap comes into its own with teams of roughly four to twenty people. The PersonalMap works just as well in a one to one conversation.

Can I use the Floormap without certification?

No. The Floormap is ordered through the Dashboard of a certified Guide. If you want to use it without certifying yourself, you bring in a Guide.

Does this work digitally or remotely?

Yes. The map can be hung on a wall or shown on screen, and certified Guides work online in this way too. The physical movement falls away, but the conversation remains: participants point out their place and talk about it.

Can the Floormap be shipped abroad?

That is usually not necessary, because Floormaps are produced locally. Wherever you work, your Floormap is made and delivered nearby.
